The Future

Renewable Energy Supply

KTS, in partnership with UWA and world leading organisations in the field of tidal power, are pushing forward with an ambitious plan to power Cockatoo island using renewable energy from Tidal power by 2025.

Principles

  • Use of turbines to generate electricity from the horizontal movement of water
  • Highly predictable resource: accompanying the rise and fall of the tide
  • Reliable power output
  • Highest viability and kinetic energy sites:
    • Near islands
    • Headlands and channels

Advantages

  • High power density: smaller/fewer turbines compared to wind
  • Proven and commercially ready concept
  • Expertise leveraged from wind, O&G industries
  • Straightforward decommissioning with no significant ecological impact
